The Neuro Film Series – Discover science at the movies!

 

Our next film is THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY.  It is the remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), a successful and charismatic editor-in-chief of French Elle, who believes he is living his life to its absolute fullest when a sudden stroke leaves him in a life-altered state. While the physical challenges of Bauby's fate leave him with little hope for the future, he begins to discover how his life's passions, his rich memories and his newfound imagination can help him achieve a life without boundaries.

 

"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" will be hosted by Liam Durcan on Thursday, January 13, 2011 (6:30 pm). Liam Durcan was trained at the University of Manitoba and McGill University and is currently the Neurologist-in-Chief at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. Aside from practicing medicine, he also writes and has had two books of fiction published (A Short Journey by Car--2004 and Garcia's Heart--2007).

Neuro Movie Nights are free and snacks can be purchased (including wraps and popcorn!).

 

The film will be shown with French sub-titles.

 

All films take place at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 3801 University street, Jeanne Timmins amphitheatre

La série de films du Neuro – Découvrez la science par le cinéma!

 

Notre prochain film est THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (Le Scaphandre et le papillon).  Il relate l’histoire réelle et remarquable de Jean-Dominique Bauby (interprété par Mathieu Amalric), le réputé rédacteur en chef charismatique du magazine français ELLE, qui estime profiter au maximum de la vie lorsqu’un accident vasculaire cérébral fait basculer sa vie. Si les épreuves physiques de Bauby lui laissent peu d’espoir quant à son avenir, il découvre comment s’inventer une vie sans limites, grâce à ses passions, à la richesse de ses souvenirs et à son imagination renouvelée.

 

La présentation du film sera animée par Liam Durcan le jeudi 13 janvier 2011 (18 h 30). Liam Durcan a été formé à l’Université du Manitoba et à l’Université McGill et est actuellement neurologue en chef à l’Institut et hôpital neurologiques de Montréal. Outre d’exercer la médecine, il est aussi un auteur qui a publié deux œuvres de fiction (A Short Journey by Car, 2004 et Garcia's Heart, 2007).

L’entrée aux Soirées cinéma du Neuro est gratuite. On peut se procurer des grignotines (notamment des sandwichs roulés et du maïs soufflé!).

 

Le film sera présenté avec des sous-titres français.

 

Tous les films sont projetés à l’Institut et hôpital neurologiques de Montréal, 3801, rue University, à l’amphithéâtre Jeanne-Timmins.
