This will be your chance to talk to them about the circuitous pathways and the important, but often serendipitous, connections that led them to where they are now. *The third session of the Pathways and Connectionsseries will feature Dr. Alain Dagher and will be held at Thomson House (3650 McTavish , room 403) starting at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 20th. *Dr. Dagher is a neurologist and associate professor at the Montreal Neurological Institute and in the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University. He received his degrees from McGill University and the University of Toronto before doing a residency in Neurology at Cornell and McGill, and then a fellowship in brain imaging and movement disorders at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. His current research focuses on understanding the role of the basal ganglia in normal brain function and disease. Dr. Dagher heads the *Human Dopamine Neuroimaging Lab*, which examines various pathological states that are related to a disruption in dopamine function: these range from motor disease (Parkinson?s) to addictive disorders (gambling, smoking, obesity). Dr. Dagher and his students employ various neuroimaging techniques -- including functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and transcranial magnetic stimulation -- in order to investigate some of the behavioral, endocrine, and metabolic correlates of these syndromes so that they may gain a better and more-thorough understanding into the complexities of these disease states. *More details about future sessions of Pathways and Connections will be sent out as soon as they become available.* These sessions will generally be held at Thomson House , but we also plan to have at least one session per year at the Douglas Hospital. *Please note that space is limited: to **RSVP, or for more information, please contact Zografos Caramanos **.* -- Zografos Caramanos, M.A. Research Assistant, Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Unit Ph.D. Student, Integrated Program in Neuroscience McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University 3801 University Street, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, H3A 2B4 (phone) 514-299-8160; (fax) 514-398-2975 (e-mail) zografos.caramanos at mcgill.ca (website) www.zcaramanos.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The film is based on the infamous "Stanford Prison Experiment" conducted in 1971 by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo. In both the movie and original experiment, a makeshift prison is set up and male participants 'act' as prisoners and guards. The mood and interplay between the two groups changes dramatically over time, testing the impressionability and obedience of people when provided with a legitimizing ideology and social and institutional support. Das Experiment will be hosted by Dr. Thomas Stroh, Scientist. Dr. Stroh is both a professor at McGill and scientist at the Montreal Neurological Institute & Hospital. He is interested in G protein-coupled receptors. His research specifically focuses on the mechanisms governing the availability of receptors at the cell surface of neurons and of neuroendocrine cells. The film, Das Experiment is a favorite of Dr. Stroh's. He looks forward to sharing some insights and to discussing this controversial film with you. The movie will be shown in its original language (German) with English sub-titles. Neuro Movie Nights are free and snacks can be purchased (including wraps and popcorn!) All films take place at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 3801 University street, Jeanne Timmins amphitheatre For more information see: www.neuroevents.mcgill.ca May 24 - Extraordinary Measures ~ La prochaine soir?e de cin?ma du Neuro pr?sente Das Experiment le mardi 19 avril 2011 ? 18 h 30. We will also illustrate how you can run the same application on a single machine using the Parallel Computing Toolbox and on large scale computing resource such as a cluster using the MATLAB Distributed Computing Server. This session will cover: ??? Toolboxes with built-in support for parallel computing ??? Creating parallel applications to speed up independent tasks ??? Programming with distributed arrays to work with large data sets ??? Scaling up to computer clusters, grid environments or clouds ??? Tips on developing parallel algorithms 10:30 a.m. ??? 12:00 p.m. Session 2: Handling Large Data Sets This seminar will describe strategies for handling large amounts of data in MATLAB and avoiding "out-of-memory" errors. It will provide you with an understanding of the causes of memory limitations in MATLAB and a set of techniques to increase the available memory in MATLAB. It will also show techniques for minimizing memory usage in MATLAB while accessing, storing, processing, and plotting data. Additionally, accessing memory across multiple systems using parallel computing will be explored. ??? Understanding memory and its constraints ??? Minimizing your memory footprint in MATLAB ??? Accessing memory across multiple systems Register for these seminars at: http://click.em.mathworks.com/?qs=99f75644e736c0406683786544c049dc154918a78d927240525bd5f610e25dab3d18a70547158abd ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please forward this invitation to any colleagues who may be interested in this event. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We hope you can join us. Conference Room Speaker: Deda Gillespie, Assistant Professor, McMaster University Title: Developmental refinement of converging excitatory and inhibitory maps in auditory brainstem. Abstract: How converging topographic maps are established and refined is a major question for developmental systems neuroscience. This question is of particular interest in the lateral superior olive (LSO) of the auditory brainstem, where the converging inputs are of opposite sign. I will discuss recent work in the lab addressed at understanding the role of glutamate release in developmental plasticity of inhibitory inputs to the LSO, transient developmental expression of the calcium-sensing protein Synaptotagmin 1 at these glutamate-releasing immature inhibitory synapses, and evidence for glutamate spillover and crosstalk between immature excitatory and inhibitory synapses in the LSO. The Winter-2011 Program of the BIC Lecture Series will feature a number of presentations examining the use of advanced brain imaging techniques to better understand the structure and function of the human brain. The theme for this season's BIC Lecture Series will be "The Cerebral Cortex" -- with many of the lectures being aimed at exploring how different structural and functional imaging techniques are being used to further our understanding of this most incredible structure. Please join us for our thirteenth lecture of the season, which will be held on Monday, April the 18th, at 1:00 pm in the de Grandpr? Communications Centre of the MNI (3801 University Street, Montreal, QC, H3A 2B4). This lecture will be given by Dr. Pierre Rainville, who will give us an introduction to what emotional responses tell us about brains in pain. We hope to see there! JENNIFER ----- Original Message ----- From: Christophe Grova To: 217L-BME_FULL-TIME_ACADEMICS at LISTS.MCGILL.CA Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 8:38 AM Subject: Seminar in Biomedical Engineering - Wednesday April 20th - 1 pm - Room 333 Dear all, Our next Biomedical Engineering Dpt seminar is TODAY Wednesday - April 20that 1 pm Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt). Speaker: Claudine Gauthier, M.Sc., PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Rick Hoge, D?partement de physiologie, sciences neurologiques, Universit? de Montr?al Title: A generalized procedure for calibrated fMRI: simultaneous measurement of metabolic and vascular reactivity Abstract: Comparison of BOLD activation signals between different groups, such as in aging and disease, can be misleading due to differences in hemodynamic physiology. To allow quantitative comparisons, calibrated MRI techniques estimate cerebral metabolic rate of O2 consumption (CMRO2) from BOLD. Calibration techniques involve estimation of M, equivalent to the maximum possible BOLD signal change, by extrapolating from smaller changes obtained during hypercapnia or hyperoxia. Here I present a new and more robust calibration technique, based on a generalization of previous BOLD signal models with combined hypercapnia and hyperoxia. . This movie was inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life threatening disease (Pompe's disease). Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill to form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. Extraordinary Measures will be hosted by one of the Neuro's own. Scientist and Director of Molecular Neurogenetics, Eric Shoubridge, PhD. is a Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Human Genetics at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University. He is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Scholar and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Eric Shoubridge's laboratory focuses on the molecular genetics and cell biology of mitochondrial encephelomyopathies, diseases that result from deficiencies in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. His lab is also developing systems to transform mammalian mitochondria to create models of the human diseases. Discover science at the movies on May 24, 6:30 pm at the Neuro Film Series! Neuro Movie Nights are free and snacks can be purchased (including wraps and popcorn!). All films take place at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 3801 University street, Jeanne Timmins amphitheatre For more information see: www.neuroevents.mcgill.ca -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
