A LONG TIME COMING Unlike most Academy Award winners, Kingston's Mark Wolforth wasn't terribly surprised when he was told he had won one. Wolforth was told last week that he had garnered a technical achievement award from the prestigious film body. "They've been looking into (my work) for two years now, and it's for work I did about six years ago," the electrical engineer said from his Kingston home. "It's like getting the Academy Award for most obsolete product." Wolforth called his product -- which, as the academy describes it, "enables accurate colour presentation in the digital intermediate preview process" -- obsolete because it is now incorporated into many of today's digital projectors. Wolforth said he got into the film business by accident. The Montreal native had done his master's degree in biomedical engineering at McGill University (1994), not film studies. "(My biomedical engineering focus) was imaging stuff, which is what got me into this kind of thing because the biomed stuff I did was all image manipulation -- stuff directly related to deal with large data sets of images," Wolforth said. "You wouldn't think it, but there is some commonality." Bruce Pike, Prof." > Cc: Mikael Persson > Subject: Medical imaging positions Dear Professor Pike, We are making a considerable effort in the medical imaging area and are looking for suitable candidates at the professorial levels. As one of the leading experts in the field you are likely to have suitable candidates for this initiative in your network. I would be grateful if you would let me know of such candidates and also please feel free to forward this email directly to them as well as to colleagues in the field. The effort is extensive and long term. The Sahlgrenska University hospital has initiated a considerable investment by constructing a new wing of the hospital devoted to imaging and image-based intervention. In a first instance we are looking to make two appointments at the assistant professorial level. We plan to follow this by advertising two full professorships later in the year. All fours positions will be in a new centre which is located at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Employment will be with one of the parties, Chalmers University of Technology or Gothenburg University. The two full professorships will be joint appointments. For further details of the two first two positions please see http://www.chalmers.se/s2/EN/news/vacancies-at-signals/positions/assistant-professors-in With best regards and thank you for your help Mikael Persson Division Head, Biomedical Engineering Professor Dep. of Signals and Systems Chalmers University of Technology Mikael.Persson at chalmers.se Office +46(0)31 772 1576 Mobile +46(0)703168161 Secr++46 31 772 15 83 Home+(0)32250783 From jennifer.chew at mcgill.ca Fri Jan 22 11:19:25 2010 From: jennifer.chew at mcgill.ca (Jennifer Chew, Ms.) Date: Fri, 22 Jan 2010 11:19:25 -0500 Subject: [BIC-announce] =?iso-8859-1?q?FW=3A_DERNIER_RAPPEL/LAST_REMINDER?= =?iso-8859-1?q?=3A_RBIQ_Journ=E9e_scientifique_-_QBIN_Scientific_Day_=28I?= =?iso-8859-1?q?NVITATION=29_January_29=2C_2010?= Message-ID: FOR YOUR INFORMATION. Howe School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Harvard University Boston, Massachusetts, USA To treat defects within the heart, surgeons currently use stopped-heart techniques. These procedures are highly invasive and incur a significant risk of neurological impairment. We are developing methods for performing surgery within the heart while it is beating. New real-time 3-D ultrasound imaging allows visualization through the opaque blood pool, but this imaging modality poses difficult image processing challenges, including poor resolution, acoustic artifacts, and data rates of 30 to 40 million voxels per second. To track instruments within the heart we have developed a Radon transform-based algorithm, which is readily implemented in real-time on graphics processor units. For manipulation of rapidly moving cardiac tissue we have created a fast robotic device that can track the tissue based on ultrasound image features. This allows the surgeon to interact with the heart as if it was stationary. To integrate ultrasound imaging with the robotic device we have developed a predictive controller that compensates for the 50-100 ms imaging and image processing delays to ensure good tracking performance. In vivo studies show that this approach enhances dexterity and lowers applied forces. Jennifer Jennifer Chew McConnell Brain Imaging Centre MNI - WB317 3801 University Street Montreal, Qc H3A 2B4 Telephone: 514-398-8554 Fax: 514-398-2975 * * Rotman Conference Baycrest is an academic centre affiliated with the University of Toronto Register Now The Frontal Lobes: 1990, 2000, and now 2010 The Rotman Research Institute of Baycrest was inaugurated in 1989. Its first conference, held in 1990, focused on one of the strategic research foci of the Institute - the frontal lobes. The three day conference was sold out, with approximately 500 attendees. In 2000, Baycrest joined forces with Berkeley to hold the second Rotman conference on the frontal lobes. This five day scientific meeting was attended by some 850 individuals from 33 different countries. Baycrest/Berkeley are once again joining forces to organize for 2010 the 20th Rotman Research Institute Conference, and its third focusing on the frontal lobes. To celebrate the event, there will be three keynote speakers; over 40 internationally recognized presenters organized into nine thematic areas with all sessions plenary; interactive discussions among presenters and audience; moderated poster sessions; and two trainee awards for each of three poster sessions, for the best posters of that session. The number of attendees this time is uncertain, but space is limited. Organized by Donald T. Stuss, PhD and Robert T. Knight, MD Location The conference is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, 255 Front Street West, in the heart of downtown Toronto. The centre is easily accessible by public transit (subway, bus or streetcar). Parking is available at the Centre as well as a number of local lots. Format There will be three special keynote Speakers. The Conference will consist of five days of formal presentations by leading researchers from around the world. The program is broken down into specific symposia centered on a common theme. Questions and Panel Discussions - at the end of each session, the speakers will convene into a panel and respond to questions from the audience. As well, 5-minute Q&A periods will take place after each presentation. Speakers will be requested to disclose to the audience any real or apparent conflict(s) of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of this program. Poster Sessions - Posters will be available for viewing during the refreshment and lunch breaks. There will be formal Moderated Poster Sessions at the end of the day on: Tuesday, March 23, 2010 which will include posters on the topics from Monday & Tuesday Wednesday, March 24, 2010 and Thursday, March 25, 2010 which will include posters on the topics from Thursday & Friday. Lunch Breaks - please note that all registrants are expected to make their own arrangements. Conference Objectives By the end of the conference, participants will be able to: * identify the anatomy and pathophysiology of frontal lobe function and dysfunction * recognize the value of neuropharmacological, neurophysiological and neuroimaging assessment and treatment procedures * identify the expression of frontal lobe function and dysfunction across maturational stages * recognize the breadth of frontal lobe functions, from cognitive to emotional * differentially diagnose frontal lobe dysfunctions in neurological and psychiatric disorders * critically evaluate the rehabilitation of frontal lobe dysfunctions Who Should Attend The conference will be of interest to researchers, clinicians, academics, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and graduate students in the areas of clinical, cognitive and neuro -psychology, neurology, psychiatry, family medicine, rehabilitation and related disciplines.
