Subject: Neurobiologist Marc Tessier Lavigne gives Beatty Lecture, Saturday, Oct 17

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Marc Tessier-Lavigne, VP Research and Chief Scientific Officer at Genentech, will deliver the Beatty Memorial Lecture
"Brain Development and Brain Repair: The life and death of nerve cells" on Saturday, October 17 at 10 am in the Centre Mont Royal, 2200 Mansfield.

Dr. Tessier Lavigne's lecture will be of interest to students and scholars of science as well as to an educated, non-expert audience. A graduate of McGill, Dr. Tessier-Lavigne was professor at Stanford University before joining the biotech firm Genentech in 2003. With his research, he answered a question that stumped scientists for more than a century by discovering netrins, the chemicals that guide axons to their targets. His lecture will be an engaging presentation on neurons and brain development.

The Beatty Lecture, McGill's most prestigious public lecture, is offered annually. This year the lecture is delivered by world renowned neuroscientist Dr Tessier-Lavigne in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital.
