Communications Centre (MNI), is Dr. Greg DeAngelis from Washington University, School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology The title of his talk is: "Seeing in 3D: roles of area MT in depth perception" Greg's laboratory studies cortical circuits that mediate visual perception and visually guided behavior, using a creative fusion of the disciplines of neurophysiology, psychology. His talk will describe experiments that make use of a 3D virtual reality system to provide monkeys with naturalistic combinations of visual stimuli and inertial motion. This work has provided a detailed picture of the mechanisms by which cortical neurons integrate visual and vestibular signals to compute one's direction of heading through 3D space. I am looking forward to seeing you all there. Christopher Pack, Ph.D. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... These ashtrays should help reduce the amount of cigarette butts found discarded on campus grounds. Cigarette filters are not biodegradable and it can take years for the cellulose acetate fibres to decay into a powder that can't be seen. We would like to remind smokers that somebody has to pick up those butts that are discarded on the ground. This is done with the use of machinery or by having employees sweep the area to keep the area clean. Placing butts directly into ashtrays provided would greatly reduce the impact to our grounds. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a waste type consisting of any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic appliance. As electronic equipment becomes obsolete the regulations surrounding the disposal of electronic equipment may be the first time an individual or department has to think about this type of waste. Cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) used in computer monitors contains lead, mercury, cadmium and phosphorous as well as many other toxic elements found in smaller quantities. Larger CRTs can contain up to 2 kg of lead, used to make a clearer picture and to provide a shield from the radiation inside the monitor. McGill has established a management program http://www.mcgill.ca/wmp/ for hazardous material and will pick up old electronic equipment for proper recycling (http://www.mcgill.ca/wmp/electronic/). We don't want electronic equipment ending up in our collection bins for non-hazardous solid waste. To achieve a sustainable future, environmental protection must constitute an integral part of our actions today. We as responsible members of the McGill community must demonstrate the transfer of knowledge to our daily actions. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The title of his talk is "Epilepsy and consciousness: why are patients with absence epilepsy absent?" Hal has been working with behavioral, electrophysiological and metabolic measurements during seizures in humans and experimental animals. He has been particularly interested in the effect that seizure discharges have at a distance and how they can affect brain function, particularly attempting to tease out the different components of what we simplistically call a "generalized" seizure. He has made use of sophisticated techniques including combining measurements of EEG, fMRI, blood flow and oxygen consumption. CN-NINM uses patterns of electrical stimulation on the skin of the tongue, face, neck and/or head. This stimulation excites neural impulses to the brainstem and cerebellum via the lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve and chorda tympani (branch of facial nerve). We hypothesize that the CN-NINM causes radiating therapeutic neurochemical and neurophysiologic changes in the brain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed significant long lasting changes in circuitries of the inferior cerebellum, dorsal pons varolli and medulla (all areas deeply involved in the static and dynamic movement control processing) after CN-NINM treatment. The result is essentially brain plasticity on demand - priming or up-regulating of targeted neural structures to develop new functional pathways, which is the goal of neuro-rehabilitation and a primary means of functional recovery from brain damage. The condensed list of improved symptoms, observed in our preliminary research on a wide range of neurological disorders includes: improvement of static and dynamic balance, gait, sensitivity and mobility of the paretic side, speech, vision, recovery of sleep pattern, decrease of tinnitus and headache, improvement of memory, attention and general well-being. The CN-NINM can be considered as multi-targeted non-invasive therapy, initiates a recovery of multiple damaged or suppressed brain functions widely affected in traumatic brain injury patients, and might be considered as primary and/or supplemental rehabilitation therapy. Could you forward it to the people in the BIC? It is tomorrow night at 6:30 on CTV. Below is a link to a Gazette article. Sandra STING HAS MUSIC ON THE BRAIN Neuroscience is proving that music is essential to our lives, thanks to new technology and scientists and musicians who want to understand the link between the brain and music. Sting, in particular, wanted to know what goes on inside his head when playing and listening to music. The singer-songwriter volunteered to be a guinea pig for the documentary The Musical Brain, [with McGill neuroscientist Dan Levitin] which delves into what happens when mind and melody meet. The one-hour special tomorrow night reveals compelling evidence of what our brains do when music enters the equation.
