Abstract: In untracked freehand 3D ultrasound (US), image content can be used to infer the trajectory of the transducer without a position tracking device. Because of the finite width of the ultrasound beam, there is a relationship between the correlation of two US images and the out-of-plane distance between them. The nominal relationship between image correlation and the out-of-plane separation between images can be established from controlled scans of a speckle phantom and used to determine out-of-plane motion in new data sets. Unfortunately, this nominal relationship only holds under special conditions, which hold for speckle phantoms but are only met occasionally, or loosely, in real tissue. I will present a method for learning the elevational correlation length of US signals in arbitrary tissue from a set of example synthetic US scans using sparse Gaussian process regression. Experiments on synthetic and real imagery of animal tissue show that this data driven approach generalises well across transducers, yielding results of accuracy similar to the heuristic state of the art method. Localization of these radioactive seeds is necessary for evaluating the dosimetry. We address the seed localization problem with introducing an intensity-based registration framework between fluoroscopy and ultrasound. Since seeds are dominantly visible in fluoroscopy and prostate anatomy is visible in ultrasound, with this inter modality registration we can obtain the seeds positions with respect to the surrounding soft tissues and hence perform the dosimetry. CN-NINM uses patterns of electrical stimulation on the skin of the tongue, face, neck and/or head. This stimulation excites neural impulses to the brainstem and cerebellum via the lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve and chorda tympani (branch of facial nerve). We hypothesize that the CN-NINM causes radiating therapeutic neurochemical and neurophysiologic changes in the brain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed significant long lasting changes in circuitries of the inferior cerebellum, dorsal pons varolli and medulla (all areas deeply involved in the static and dynamic movement control processing) after CN-NINM treatment. The result is essentially brain plasticity on demand - priming or up-regulating of targeted neural structures to develop new functional pathways, which is the goal of neuro-rehabilitation and a primary means of functional recovery from brain damage. The condensed list of improved symptoms, observed in our preliminary research on a wide range of neurological disorders includes: improvement of static and dynamic balance, gait, sensitivity and mobility of the paretic side, speech, vision, recovery of sleep pattern, decrease of tinnitus and headache, improvement of memory, attention and general well-being. The CN-NINM can be considered as multi-targeted non-invasive therapy, initiates a recovery of multiple damaged or suppressed brain functions widely affected in traumatic brain injury patients, and might be considered as primary and/or supplemental rehabilitation therapy.
