He completed a research fellowship and Masters Degree in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University. Dr. Zwaigenbaum's research focuses on early behavioral and biological markers, and early developmental trajectories in children with autism and related disorders. He currently holds an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Health Research (AHFMR) Health Scholar and Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award. Dr. Zwaigenbaum is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta, and the Co-director of the Autism Research Centre based at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. He is also an editor for Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice. Presenter: Lonnie Zwaigenbaum MD Title: Early development in autism: Insights from prospective studies of high-risk infants Abstract: Prospective studies of high-risk infants have provided a new window into early development in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yielding new insights into early behavioural markers, developmental trajectories (including regression), and the interface between ASD and the broader autism phenotype. This presentation will review the latest findings from 'baby sibs' research in ASD, with special reference to the Canadian Infant Sibling Study, which currently includes over 400 participants. Implications for neurobiological research in autism will be discussed. The purchase of acetonitrile has been limited by the distributor (Fisher, VWR, Sigma-Aldrich etc) to a few liters per customer and we already bought our maximum. I therefore urge everybody who is currently doing PET studies and needs radiotracers to try buying acetonitrile (HPLC grade preferable) and bring it to the radiochemistry facility. I am hoping your support will prevent cancelations. If trying to place orders, please use a delivery address different from the cyclotron facility and buy "HPLC grade acetonitrile". The shortage is thought to last for some time (backorders until 2010). Natural (fossil) endocasts can sometimes be found, and artificial endocasts can be typically obtained by filling the empty braincase with latex and using the latter as a mould to build a plaster cast. More recently, CT has been extensively used to build "virtual" or "digital" endocasts in a precise and non-invasive way. Studying endocasts is of the utmost importance, because they constitute the only way to indirectly assess global (size, shape) and sometimes local characteristics (meningeal/sulcal/gyral patterns) of the cerebral anatomy of extinct species, and especially hominids. Due to the difficulty to observe and analyse them before the advent of CT, cranial endocasts have been somewhat neglected in many phylogenetic studies compared to the external skull anatomy, whereas they provide a unique way to look at the evolution of the human brain, and to compare it with that of its closest relatives (i.e. the other primates). To date, there exist only few tools to study such data in an automated way. Endocasts pose specific problems, most notably due to the difficulty to define relevant anatomical landmarks on them.
