In studies of both adults and children, RD readers demonstrate anomalous brain activation patterns at posterior regions in the left hemisphere (LH) during tasks that make explicit demands on phonological processing, along with, what appears to be, a compensatory reliance on frontal lobe sites and right hemisphere systems. Brain/behavior analyses have indicated that the development of reading fluency in young children is strongly associated with the development of the left hemisphere posterior reading system. Our new longitudinal project is aimed at establishing key neuro- chemical and genetic factors associated with atypical brain/behavior trajectories; initial findings will be discussed. With regard to plasticity and learning, intervention studies have examined the influence of intensive phonological remediation in young at-risk children, revealing substantial gains in both reading scores and development of these LH reading systems for children afforded this treatment. Recent extensions of our learning research with older RD readers continue to suggest a high degree of plasticity in this population. He received his Master's degree in Physics in 1986 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He then went on to do a PhD in Neuroscience (1993), under the supervision of Terry Sejnowski, at the Johns Hopkins University and Salk Institute. After post-doctoral research at Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he started his own laboratory at NCBS in 1999. His laboratory studies the effects of stressful experiences on synapses, and cells in the amygdala, by using a combination of behavioral, neuroanatomical, genetic engineering and electrophysiological techniques. His research has identified several novel neural correlates of stress-induced plasticity in the amygdala, which are strikingly different from those observed in the hippocampus. These findings suggest that prolonged stress leaves its mark by enhancing both the physiological and structural basis of synaptic connectivity in the amygdala, thereby triggering the emotional symptoms observed in stress-related psychiatric disorders. More recently, he was part of an international team that used a mouse model to reverse the symptoms of Fragile X Syndrome, the most common form of heritable mental retardation and the leading identified cause of autism. Since 1999 he is also a visiting scientist in Susumu Tonegawa's lab at MIT. Professor Chattarji was awarded an International Senior Research Fellowship by The Wellcome Trust in 2003. He is a member of the Council of the Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society (MCCS) and serves as the Secretary of MCCS-Asia. McNaughton Lecture, Friday, November 28th, 2008 Colleagues, The 2008 Francis L McNaughton Lecture will be delivered on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 9 am in the Jeanne Timmins Amphitheatre by Professor .Katherine Bushby of Newcastle upon Tyne UK. Dr. Bushby is a world class clinical geneticist with widely recognized expertise in the neuromuscular field. She has established genotype- phenotype correlations in many neuromuscular diseases including the limb girdle dystrophies which will be the focus of her McNaughton Lecture. Professor Bushby has established a renowned Neuromuscular Center in Newcastle upon Tyne which is a worthy successor to a similar center created in the 1960's by Lord Walton. Dr. Bushby has also created a large, unique Group of 21 European Centers of Excellence in Neuromuscular Diseases called TREAT-MND. It is supported by the European Union as it is an unparalleled establishment that coordinates scientific, clinical and translational research in the European neuromuscular field. Limb girdle dystrophies is a field of genetic diseases that greatly benefitted from the application of molecular science to clinical medicine.Dr. Bushby is eminently qualified to discuss this important and fascinating field of Neurology to which she has made outstanding contributions. Do not miss this treat. George Karpati ________________________________ Francis L.
