Title: "Cholinergic Modulation of Arousal: Relevance for Sleep and Anesthesiology" Bio Paragraph: Ralph Lydic, PhD., is the Bert La Du Professor of Anesthesiology, Professor of Physiology, and Associate Chair for Anesthesiology Research at the University of Michigan. Dr. Lydic's laboratory has been funded continuously since 1988 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The goals of his research programs are to elucidate the mechanisms by which sleep, opioids, and volatile anesthetics depress breathing and arousal. His research has promoted the view that neurons generating sleep and wakefulness preferentially modulate the ability of opioids, hypnotics, and anesthetics to obtund wakefulness. Among these are multivariate techniques which have wide applicability in many circumstances. In collaboration with the University of Montreal, we have arranged for a two-day workshop devoted to one of these methods, partial least squares (PLS), to be given by Randy McIntosh and Nancy Lobaugh, from the University of Toronto, who have been leaders in this field for some time. (see references, below) The workshop is aimed at faculty, postdocs, and advanced graduate students who have experience with neuroimaging and wish to enlarge their knowledge of analysis techniques. Details about PLS analyses as they pertain to PET and fMRI as well as ERP techniques will be discussed. Background information will be presented on the first day to ensure a sufficient base for attendees, but the assumption is that most attendees have a rudimentary knowledge of matrix algebra, statistics, neuroimaging. The second day will be a hands-on computer lab using both example data sets and data that participants bring. Further details concerning the format for data to be analyzed will be posted shortly. Pascal is a real leader in the study of gene expression in developing and adult mammalian skeletal muscle. He established this reputation with an in-depth and pioneering analysis of the cis-elements and trans-factors involved in controlling the fiber-type-specific expression of the aldolase A gene. This work has been a criticial step forward for the field of muscle gene regulation because it represents the first (and only) molecular genetic mechanism known to control fast fiber-type specificity. Pascal discovered that the key players are the homeobox transcription factor Six and its co-factor Eya and his work has revealed a broad relevance for these factors in muscle, and in other tissues. In his talk he will be focusing on the mechanism of fast fiber type specific gene expression and I think all of you who are interested in how the organism generates diverse forms of the "same" cell type (muscle fibers, or neurons, or glia) will find it very interesting. See you there. In order to qualify for the study, participants must be right-handed native speakers of French or English. Participants who have a high resolution MRI of their brain are preferred. In addition, the following are considered contraindications for TMS studies: 1) Pacemaker 2) Aneurysm Clip 3) Heart/Vascular Clip 4) Prosthetic Valve 5) Metal Prosthesis 6) Pregnancy 7) Personal and/or family history of epilepsy 8) Use of psychopharmacological agents: Antipsychotic drugs (neuroleptics and major tranquilizers); Antidepressant drugs; Antianxiety drugs (anxiolytic sedatives); Antimaniac drugs (lithium). 9) Under 18 years old. You will not be able to participate in the study if any of these conditions apply to you. The study, which was approved by the McGill Faculty of Medicine Institutional Review Board (FWA:000004545), will take place at the Center for Research on Language, Mind and the Brain, located on 3640 rue de la Montagne. The study takes approximately 2-3 hours and participants will be compensated at the rate of 25$ per hour. For more information on the study, please contact me by email or by phone at 398-6998 or 398-6959. thanks, pascale From jennifer.chew at mcgill.ca Mon Sep 25 15:02:05 2006 From: jennifer.chew at mcgill.ca (Jennifer Chew, Ms.) Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2006 15:02:05 -0400 Subject: [BIC-announce] -BIC Seminar Series - Monday, October 2 , 2006 Title: Everything you ever wanted to know about Talairach space but were afraid to ask Message-ID: BIC SEMINAR SERIES NEXT BIC SEMINAR Date: Monday, October 2, 2006 Time: 1:00 P.M.
