Subject: Genetic Disease lecture, Oct 17

Genetic disease experts to speak at MNI

On Tuesday, October 17, Dr. Tony Futerman from the Weizmann Institute in
Israel will give a public lecture, "Genetic Diseases: The power of
prevention", at 7:30 pm in the MNI's Jeanne Timmins Amphitheatre.

Dr. Futerman, an expert on Tay-Sachs disease, will be joined by other
specialists in genetic diseases:
Dr. Charles Scriver from McGill University and
Dr. Annette Feigenbaum from the University of Toronto; and by
Mr. Denis Fisette, a Quebecois father who lost a daughter to
Tay-Sachs.

This lecture will highlight the increased risk of genetic disease for
certain groups:
French Canadians from the Saint Lawrence Valley area,
people of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, or
people of Asian, Greek or Italian descent to transmit genes for
fatal or serious diseases such as Tay-Sachs, Canavan or Thalessemia.

Information will be provided about the importance and availability of
testing to prevent these diseases.

All are welcome to attend this bilingual lecture. A dessert reception
will follow the lecture (dietary laws will be observed).
