Dr. James G. Herman is an Associate Professor of Oncology - Cancer Biology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. His area of special interest is gene silencing and he helped develop methylation-specific PCR: a novel PCR assay for methylation status of CpG islands. Aberrant DNA methylation is the most common molecular lesion of the cancer cells. Neither gene mutations (nucleotide changes, deletions, recombinations) nor cytogenetic abnormalities are as common in human tumors as DNA methylation alterations. Dr Herman showed that the MGMT (O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase) promoter is frequently methylated in gliomas (40 percent) and those with methylated promoter respond to the carmustine in terms of tumor regression and disease-free survival. Dr Herman's finding has been recently confirmed by Hegi, et al. ( N Engl J Med. 2005;352(10):997) in a clinical trial on the Radiotherapy plus Concomitant and Adjuvant Temozolomide for Glioblastoma. In this trial, only patients with methylated MGMT status significantly benefited from temozolomide, whereas those with methylated MGMT promoter did not have such a benefit. CURE is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization founded in 1998 by parents of children with epilepsy who were frustrated with their inability to protect their children from the devastation of seizures and the side effects of medications. Since its inception in 1998, CURE has raised over $ 3 million to fund research and other initiatives that will lead the way to a cure for epilepsy. CURE funds seed grants to young and established investigators to explore new areas and collect the data necessary to apply for further funding by governmental agencies. To date, CURE has awarded over thirty cutting edge research projects. CURE has also helped in increasing the US federal budget allocated for research in epilepsy. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (Note: The talk by Jonathan Taylor the following day Fri 28 Oct 15h30 at UQAM, 200 Sherbrooke west, SH-3420, will present more on this topic -see http://www.crm.umontreal.ca/en/niveau2/index_act.html ) *********** McGILL STATISTICS SEMINAR ******************** Date: THURSDAY 27 October 2005 at 4:15 pm (16h15). Place: Burnside Hall Room 1205, McGill University 805 ouest, rue Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal. Coffee and Cookies: From 4:00pm (16h00) in the same Room 1205. Title: FROM STATISTICS TO PROBABILITY VIA GEOMETRY, AND BACK AGAIN Speaker: Robert J. Adler, Technion, Israel Abstract The aim of this talk will be to describe some new and deep results in the stochastic geometry of random processes. I shall start by briefly discussing some statistical problems related to mapping the brain, both the cerebrum (a 3-dimensional object) and the cerebral cortex, or "brain surface" (a 2-dimensional manifold in 3-dimensional space). This problem has motivated recent deep results describing the random geometry of Gaussian random fields on abstract manifolds, which I shall describe, and relate back to the original problem. I shall also discuss the connection between these results and the the classic problem of determining the distribution of the supremum of a Gaussian process over a general space. Since Keith Worsley has been the driving force behind the brain mapping problems, and Jonathan Taylor the source of most of the "recent deep results" mentioned above, and both are McGillians, there is a strong "coals to Newcastle" flavour to this talk. However, as a born and bred Novocastrian, with the call of the coal forever echoing in his ears, I shall try to add something new by emphasising how mining these rich seams gives us new ways to look at old problems in the theory of random fields. Message-ID: <000701c5d4d1$536d1bc0$fa96ce84@D34XBY21> There's a new web page for PET CBF stats analysis using FMRISTAT at http://www.math.mcgill.ca/keith/fmristat/index_pet.htm also reachable from the FMRISTAT home page. It does a stats anlysis similar to DOT, but with the latest advances in stats theory (DOT has not been changed in over 10 years!). The main tool is multistat, which is used to smooth the sd of the data to obtain ~100 df, somewhere between a voxel sd (no smoothing) and pooled sd (infinite smoothing, as currently used by DOT). Stat_summary takes care of the P-values, as for fMRI data, using the latest advances in random field theory. Transforms to Talairach space, and spatial smoothing (if desired, though I don't reccomend it) must still be done outside FMRISTAT before starting the analysis. Thanks to Manou Vaffee for inspiring me to do it, and for supplying the data! We sing at two events; 1) we tour the wards one evening in late December to sing for the patients, and 2) we provide the musical entertainment at the Reitman Lunch. Each year we lose several old members due to turnover of the Neuro population and each year we get several new members, which continues the tradition. If you are someone who likes to sing, we would be very pleased if you would join us this year. Reading music is not essential - most of us learn our parts by ear. Our main practice time is Wednesdays at noon. If it sounds interesting, please contact Ken at ken.hastings at mcgill.ca or phone (398)-1852 to find out where we are meeting.
