Hello,
I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming visit to McGill by
Dr. Janet Rossant. Dr. Rossant is a Senior Investigator at the Samuel
Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. She is also
a University Professor, University of Toronto, and Professor in the
Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics and the Department of
Obstetrics/Gynaecology, University of Toronto. Her research interests
centre on understanding the genetic control of normal and abnormal
development in the early mouse embryo using both cellular and genetic
manipulation techniques. Recently, her research has moved in two new
directions. First, stem cell research, with her discovery of a novel
placental stem cell type, the trophoblast stem cell. Second,
genome-wide functional genomics. She directs the Centre for Modelling
Human Disease in Toronto, which is undertaking genome-wide mutagenesis
in mice to develop new mouse models of human disease.

Dr. Rossant is a world leader in the field of Developmental Biology and
has been a superlative teacher who has trained generations of successful
scientists. Moreover, she has been a formidable ambassador for science
in general and for Developmental Biology in particular, both nationally
and internationally. Her impressive scientific accomplishments are
documented by both the number (more than 240) and the quality of her
publications, many of which represent seminal contributions to numerous
areas of biomedical research. The list of her publications in top
scientific journals like Nature, Science, Cell, Genes & Development, and
Development is really remarkable.=20

I strongly encourage you to attend her seminar, which will be held on
Wednesday, March 9th, at 11:30 am in Room 2/36 at the Strathcona Anatomy
and Dentistry Bldg.

JENNIFER *****KILLAM LECTURE***** TODAY MARCH 29, 2005 Speaker: Dennis Winge, Ph.D. Professor University of Utah Title: Assembly of Cytochrome C Oxidase: Proteins Involved in Metallation of the Copper Centers Time: 4:00 pm Place: de Grandpre Communication Centre ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Today's Killam speaker is Dennis Winge, a professor in Medicine and Biochemistry at the University of Utah. His lab studies how metal ions (copper, zinc, iron) are distributed in cells to sites of utilization, and the mechanisms by which cells sense the intracellular concentration of these ions and transduce these signals into regulation of gene expression. One major focus of his lab concerns mechanisms by which cells provide copper ions within the mitochondrion for assembly of metalloproteins, which is the topic of his lecture today. Dysregulation of cellular copper metabolism underlies several neurodegenerative diseases. Dennis is an excellent biochemist/molecular biologist and a great speaker. He is organizing the first Gordon conference on Metals in Cell Biology this summer. We will also describe controlled active vision techniques for image guided surgery and therapy. The underlying method is based on certain flows which give rise to (nonlinear) geometric equations which are invariant with respect to a given transformation group action. We will provide some relevant results from the theory of curve and surface evolution, and show how these may be used for a number of areas in computer vision and image processing, such as image enhancement, optical flow, registration image segmentation, shape theory, and invariant scale-spaces. We will demonstrate these techniques with a wide variety of medical images including MR, CT, and ultrasound. The talk is designed to be accessible to a general audience with an interest in medical imaging. Biography Allen ArialTannenbaum was born in New York City.
